A dog owner has melted hearts on social media after sharing what was supposed to be a funny "trend" video involving her dogs which ended up leaving the internet in tears.

The video was the woman's attempt to do a canine version of a TikTok trend where owners set up cameras to see what their cats get up to when they are out, with sometimes hilarious results.

In a post shared on TikTok in March, under the username readbetweenthepines, the poster can be seen stepping out of her front door in the middle of the day, leaving her two dogs behind, to see what they would do, but their reaction was not at all what she had expected.

As she walks out the door, the two pups can initially be seen standing right behind it, hoping that she would be just a minute, but then as soon as they realize she may be gone for longer, they lie down instead, staring at the door as if counting every second she was gone.

"I did that trend where you leave and film your cat's reaction but I did it with my dogs," the poster said in a caption, adding: "Well, I am never leaving again. Also, the crocs were paid actors."

If you were still wondering whether or not dogs actually love their owners, it turns out that they absolutely do!

VCA Animal Hospitals says: "Science proves that part of the canine brain is associated with positive emotions and they do, indeed, feel love for their human companions."

Many signs prove your dog loves you, but perhaps the most obvious one is their excitement to see you. If your dog jumps or barks or gets overly excited when you step through the door, that's because they couldn't wait to have you back home.

The video quickly went viral on social media, getting viewers from across TikTok. It has so far received over 1.2 million views and 53,900 likes on the platform.

One user, jujee45, commented: "Dogs are the only ones that truly truly miss you and the happiest ones to see your return."

Hike Manitoba said: "When dogs are calm when you leave it's because they believe you'll come back. How sweet is that."

Kevin_1 wrote: "Nobody ever greets me when I get home. Except my dog." And Lola added: "Dogs are only on this planet for two things... to love and to be loved."
