A 23-year-old woman who moved back home after graduating from university has been applauded for refusing to pay rent to her parents.
In a post on Reddit, user hero1701 explained that she had contributed financially to her household since she was 15, giving her parents 80% of her paychecks in exchange for help with tuition.
That agreement was honored, she said, but trouble began brewing when her parents asked both her and her 26-year-old older brother to begin paying rent.

She argued the rule change ignores differences in how each sibling has been treated. While she contributes to groceries, cleaning and gas, she said her brother does not and still receives daily support, including meals prepared by their mother.
"I HAVE mentioned to my parents that if they start charging rent, then I would prefer to live elsewhere where I’d be paying anyways," the original poster (OP) wrote. "But they are extremely traditional and against that idea.
"They allowed me to move out for school, but they said their culture is against women moving out of their family homes until they get married."
Unequal Treatment
The OP's story has resonated with readers, particularly around perceived unequal treatment between siblings. Research from the University of Kansas suggests these disparities can strain family connections.
“Try at all costs not to discipline or otherwise treat your children differently, lest they grow up to resent it and each other,” the authors wrote.
The OP said she offered a compromise: she would be "willing" to pay rent at age 26, matching the period her brother lived at home rent-free.
Her parents, however, declined, insisting the new rule should apply immediately to both children.
Reddit Reacts
Reddit users flocked to the comments to weigh in, with one writing, “Just want to point out that your parents are trying to have it BOTH WAYS.
"In your culture, as a woman, they said you should not move out until you’re married… Well…. guess what? I BET in the SAME culture they are traditionally NOT supposed to be charging you rent.”
Another agreed, adding, “Traditional parents who don't want their daughter to live alone before marriage DO NOT charge them rent.”
"Mom here with grown children," one commenter noted. "You don’t charge rent at different ages. You don’t let owed money slide. You don’t make your financially responsible child deal with your irresponsible child’s decisions and mess."
Toxic Families
The debate also touches on how young adults manage difficult family relationships, with psychologist Greg Kushnick noting that problematic behavior within families often involves a lack of respect for personal limits.
“Toxic people are typically unable to place themselves in other people's shoes and adjust their behavior accordingly. They usually have their version of reality and are closed off to other people's perspectives,” he told Newsweek.
The OP said she would prefer to move out if required to pay rent, but her parents oppose that option due to their beliefs.
That leaves her weighing financial independence against family expectations, while also confronting what she views as unequal standards in the household.
For now, her stance remains unchanged, as she continues to push back against paying rent under conditions she believes are inconsistent with both her upbringing and her family’s stated values.
