On anniversaries, problems in a relationship can typically be put to the side for a day—but sometimes, the day itself brings its own conflict.
A post to Reddit by u/Illustrious_Goat_143 went viral as one couple had diverging ideas about what to do for their 10-year anniversary. The disagreement prompted the wife to have a day out to herself and leave her husband at home alone with their children.
The original poster (OP), a 37-year-old woman, shared the story to the "Am I the A******?" Reddit community. She explained that she and her husband both had the day off work for their anniversary. In the morning, she found a gift left for her by her husband, who was still sleeping. She made him breakfast, but when he continued to sleep, she decided to eat it.

Then, their discussions about the day began.
"I asked if he had any plans for the day, and he said, 'to relax,'" she wrote. "I wanted to maybe go to a restaurant, or see a movie...just me and him, and he said no. By then, I was a bit disheartened, but I took his answer."
She decided to "dress up and head out" for some spa time and shopping alone, leaving her husband at home with their children. When she got home, he asked why she had left.
"I told him it was because I wasn't just going to do nothing all day because he wanted to, and that he didn't even care enough to spend time with me," she said, after which her husband "went quiet."
Where Did Things Go Wrong?
Licensed mental health counselor Natalie Rosado told Newsweek that the issue at play here was a gap in communication and expectations—something she sees as a common dynamic in her work.
"The woman had an expectation that her husband would take the initiative to celebrate their 10-year anniversary, which is a significant milestone," she said. "When he didn't, she felt disappointed and chose to treat herself instead. This situation could have gone differently if there had been clearer communication about their expectations and desires for the anniversary."
Many in the comments were divided about who was in the wrong. "It's his anniversary too," one user wrote. "He wanted to stay at home, you wanted to go out for dinner. He got you a gift and acknowledged the anniversary."
Another person had a different take: "Everyone is saying you didn't communicate but he didn't either. He didn't ask if you wanted to stay in the house. He chose to make a decision for both of y'all when that wasn't want you wanted."
Rosado, though, said that to assign blame misses the point.
"Both partners likely had valid feelings and perspectives," she said. "The husband may not have realized the importance of taking the initiative, while the wife may have felt let down by unmet expectations...It's important to recognize that both partners have a role in maintaining a healthy relationship and ensuring that significant occasions are acknowledged in a way that satisfies both parties."
She also pointed out that anniversaries themselves, while being celebratory, are not always simple. "Anniversaries can be occasions for conflict instead of celebration because they often come with heightened expectations and emotional significance. For many, anniversaries symbolize the health and happiness of the relationship, and any perceived lack of effort or enthusiasm can feel like a sign of deeper issues," she said.
"The pressure to make the day special can lead to stress and misunderstandings if partners are not on the same page."
Ultimately, Rosado credits smooth anniversary celebrations to open communication and a preemptive discussion on expectations. That way, everyone remains validated and cared for throughout a relationship's major milestones.
