Reports that the U.S. Navy is considering renaming the future USS Doris Miller aircraft carrier and potentially naming it after President Donald Trump have sparked criticism from lawmakers and veterans' advocates, while shining a renewed spotlight on one of the most celebrated enlisted sailors in American military history. Jessica Bowie, a 35-year-old Albany woman, pledged allegiance to ISIS and plotted to bomb the New York State Capitol, federal authorities alleged Thursday. Federal agents executed back‑to‑back searches on former Representative Eric Swalwell over the weekend, first seizing his electronics at San Francisco International Airport and then raiding his Washington, D.C., home as part of a widening federal probe into sexual assault allegations against the California Democrat.

Hello, I'm Shane Croucher. Welcome to Newsweek's Bulletin. Here's what you need to know today. There has been criticism of the US Navy after reports that it's considering ren aming the future USS Doris Miller aircraft carrier after President Donald Trump instead. The Ford-class carrier was named after Miller during Trump's first term in 2020. It's the first time a US aircraft carrier would be named after either an enlisted sailor or a black American. The potential name change is highly unusual. Aircraft carriers have traditionally been named after past presidents, lawmakers, and major national figures, but not sitting presidents. Jessica Bowie, a 35- year-old Albany woman, pledged allegiance to ISIS and plotted to bomb the New York State Capitol federal authorities alleged on Thursday. Investigators say she discussed explosives, sought a firearm, and identified lawmakers as targets before being arrested on Wednesday. She's been charged with attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization. Federal agents executed back-to-back searches on former Congressman Eric Swalwell over the weekend. They first seized his electronics at San Francisco International Airport and then raided his Washington DC home. It signals a sharp escalation in the criminal investigations of Swal well following multiple sexual assault allegations. Swalwell has publicly and repeatedly denied all allegations, calling them a false and politically motivated. He has maintained that he never engaged in any non-consensual conduct. Until next time, that's all for now.
