Multiple planes were targeted by suspected bomb threats in Europe on Thursday, days after a spate of similar incidents caused chaos. The Democratic midterm rout in the Senate has put Samuel Alito, the second-oldest Supreme Court justice, in a quandary. Retire now and give President Donald Trump a chance to appoint a conservative successor in the lame-duck, GOP-led Senate. Or hold out, as most of his colleagues have done for the next moment when his party controls the Senate and White House. The U.S. Embassy in Paris has issued a security warning to Americans in France ahead of a nationwide strike expected to disrupt trains, public transportation, flights and public services on Thursday.

Hello, I'm Alice Gibbs. Welcome to Newsweek's Bulletin. Here's what you need to know today. Several flights in Europe made emergency landings on Thursday after bomb threats forced them to divert. The incidents followed hoax bomb threats earlier in the week that triggered searches, diversions and in one case a military escort. More than a dozen flights from cities including Copenhagen, Dublin, Helsinki, Madrid, Milan and Warsaw were confirmed targets of bomb threats. Most diverted to other airports for emergency landings, while others landed safely at their destinations. Inspections of so-fasts have found no hazardous or suspicious materials on the planes. The Democrats' Senate mid-term sweep has left Samuel Ito, the second oldest Supreme Court justice, with a dilemma. Retire now, allowing President Donald Trump to appoint a conservative successor through the lame duck GOP-led Senate, or wait, as most colleagues have, until his party next controls both the Senate and the White House. A blue wave flipped at least seven GOP seats, with two more too close to call. A swing political analyst told Newsweek would take several election cycles to reverse. Republicans are unlikely to retake the Senate until 2032, they said, when Ito will be 82 and may still lack a Republican president. The US embassy in Paris has issued a security warning to Americans in France ahead of a nationwide strike expected to disrupt trains, public transportation, flights and public services on Thursday. Demonstrations are also expected nationwide and could continue through the weekend. The action is part of a broader dispute over wages, public services, employment and the French government's budget plans. That's all for now, see you next time.
