Hello, I'm Shane Croucher. Welcome to Newsweek's Bulletin. Here's what you need to know today. Three months after falling at his home, the timing of Senator Mitch McConnell's return to Congress remains uncertain as lawmakers prepare to reassemble in Washington. Staff and McConnell, whose seventh and final term ends in January, declined to provide an update on the Kentucky Republicans' possible return on Friday. McConnell's office previously announced he had been discharged on August 6th, some 53 days after falling at his Washington home, where emergency personnel responded after receiving a 911 call regarding an unconscious person. Open AI CEO Sam Altman posted a series of statements on X warning that the future of AI could go very badly if companies failed to keep control of increasingly powerful systems. Altman said AI safety measures must keep pace with increasingly powerful systems, warning that the technology could be dangerous if capabilities advance faster than safeguards. Altman wrote that humanity could lose control of the future to AI, adding that his company is unapologetically on team humanity, and AI must always serve people. President Donald Trump called on Ukrainian President Volodymy Zelensky to stop targeting Russia's diesel supplies, saying the strikes were causing global fuel shortages. Ukraine has stepped up long-range attacks on Russia's oil and gas industry, which Kiev says finances and directly fuels Moscow's war. The campaign has disrupted refineries and contributed to fuel rationing in parts of Russia, despite the country's status as a major oil and gas exporter. Triple A has put the US diesel average at a record $6.20 a gallon, around 68% higher than a year earlier. Until next time, that's all for now.
