Thousands of X users complained of their social media feeds not loading on Friday morning.
User reports of the outage began around 10 a.m. Eastern time (ET) Friday morning, with data shared by downdetector.com revealing that outage reports surged past 22,600 by 10:03 a.m. Most users reported problems with the app not working, which was noted in 54 percent of outage reports. Why Isn't X Working?
It currently remains unclear why X is not loading for users, although Variety reported the problems originated with Cloudflare, the site's cybersecurity provider. It also remains unclear when access to X will be restored.
The widespread X outage comes after Cloudfare had widespread outages across many of its services in November, including X and ChatGPT. Cloudflare experienced a "spike in unusual traffic” shortly before errors broke out across many major websites it serves, the internet infrastructure company previously told Newsweek.
At that time, many of Cloudfare's major websites, including other social media sites like Facebook and Truth Social, experienced outages or disruption. Facebook and Truth Social were operating normally on Friday morning.
When visiting X.com during the outage Friday morning, users were encouraged to "visit cloudflare.com for more information" and were told their connection had timed out. When clicking on the link provided, the user is told "something went wrong trying to reach" the website.
When Was the Outage First Reported?
The first X outage was reported at around 10 a.m. ET. Within half an hour, outage reports skyrocketed to more than 60,000.
X remains one of the top social media sites, boasting more than 557 million global users, according to data from Statista. More than 99 million users are in the United States. In comparison, Facebook has more than 3 billion users, and TikTok has nearly 2 billion. Statista data shows that more than 30 percent of active X users in the U.S. still refer to the platform as "Twitter."
