President Donald Trump has announced a new round of high-level trade talks between the United States and China.

Newsweek reached out to the U.S. Department of the Treasury by email on Friday for comment.

Why It Matters

Tensions between the U.S. and China have remained high as Trump made Beijing the chief target of his economic campaign to overhaul the global market. Trump raised tariffs on China, who raised tariffs in response, resulting at one point in a total tariff of 145 percent on all products from China to the U.S.

This led to the first round of high-level talks between economic representatives of each country, with Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent representing Washington as the two sides met in Geneva, Switzerland. Both sides walked away claiming victory, with tariffs reduced to 30 percent for a period of time and plans to return for further talks.

What To Know

Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and United States Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer will meet with Chinese high-ranking officials "with reference to the Trade Deal" in London on Monday, Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Friday.

"The meeting should go very well," Trump said.

News of the negotiations comes one day after Trump spoke via phone with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump said the call between the two leaders was "very good" and that he believes the call ended with a "very positive conclusion."

The call followed from both sides accusing the other of breaching the previous tariff-slashing agreement, such as Trump doubling steel and aluminum tariffs to 50 percent, and the U.S. accusing China of slow-walking its promise to ease rare earths export controls.

What People Are Saying

President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social this week: "I just concluded a very good phone call with President Xi, of China, discussing some of the intricacies of our recently made, and agreed to, Trade Deal. The call lasted approximately one and a half hours, and resulted in a very positive conclusion for both Countries. There should no longer be any questions respecting the complexity of Rare Earth products."

"Our respective teams will be meeting shortly at a location to be determined. We will be represented by Secretary of the Treasury Scott Bessent, Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick, and United States Trade Representative, Ambassador Jamieson Greer," Trump said. "During the conversation, President Xi graciously invited the First Lady and me to visit China, and I reciprocated. As Presidents of two Great Nations, this is something that we both look forward to doing."

"The conversation was focused almost entirely on TRADE. Nothing was discussed concerning Russia/Ukraine, or Iran. We will inform the Media as to scheduling and location of the soon to be meeting. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" he added.
