Ferris Coffee & Nut Co. announced they are recalling one lot of Frederik’s by Meijer Vanilla Bourbon Trail Mix, 9-ounce bags, due to fears the product may contain undeclared soy and wheat, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) says in an alert on Thursday.

Newsweek reached out to the company via email for comment.

Numerous recalls have been initiated in the past year because of potentially damaged products, foodborne illness, undeclared food allergens or the potential for bacteria.

Millions of Americans experience food sensitivities or food allergies every year. According to the FDA, the nine "major" food allergens in the United States are eggs, milk, fish, wheat, soybeans, crustacean shellfish, sesame, tree nuts and peanuts.

According to the alert, the product is sold in a black 9-ounce bag with lot number 6069-1 visible on the back, with an expiration date of December 10, 2026, also visible on the back of the product.

The recalled trail mix bags were distributed to Meijer retail stores in Illinois, Wisconsin, Kentucky, Michigan, Indiana and Ohio.

Below is a map of the states impacted:

"The recall was initiated after it was discovered that the wheat and soy-containing chocolate-covered pretzel balls were distributed in packaging that did not reveal the presence of wheat or soy, instead of the listed bourbon-flavored caramels. Subsequent investigation indicates the problem was caused by a temporary breakdown in the production and packaging processes at Ferris Coffee & Nut Co.," the alert says in part.

There have been no reported illnesses as of Thursday in relation to the recall. Production of the recalled trail mix has been halted "until the FDA, and the company are certain that the problem has been corrected," per the alert.

People who have purchased the recalled product are urged to throw the product away or return it to the original place of purchase for a full refund, according to the alert, and those with additional questions can contact the company via phone at 1-877-363-4537 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. ET.

In an email to Newsweek last year, the FDA said: "Most recalls in the U.S. are carried out voluntarily by the product manufacturer and when a company issues a public warning, typically via news release, to inform the public of a voluntary product recall, the FDA shares that release on our website as a public service.

"The FDA's role during a voluntary, firm-initiated, recall is to review the recall strategy, evaluate the health hazard presented by the product, monitor the recall, and as appropriate alert the public and other companies in the supply chain about the recall.

"The FDA provides public access to information on recalls by posting a listing of recalls according to their classification in the FDA Enforcement Report, including the specific action taken by the recalling company. The FDA Enforcement Report is designed to provide a public listing of products in the marketplace that are being recalled."

Additional information on recalls can be found via the FDA's Recalls, Market Withdrawals, & Safety Alerts.
