Shoppers lined up around the block and waited in the heat for a $3 grocery bag—and in many cases, they still left empty-handed.

Trader Joe’s latest limited-edition release, a set of pastel-striped mini tote bags, hit stores on June 17 and almost immediately sparked long lines, purchase limits and nationwide sellouts, as shoppers scrambled to get their hands on what has become one of the summer’s must-have items.

Trader Joe’s tote craze is also tapping into wider fashion trends. Stylist Michelle Barrett previously told Newsweek that the retailer’s brightly colored mini bags are “bang-on trend” for summer 2026, reflecting a shift toward bold, playful palettes like citrus tones and soft pastels after several more minimal seasons. The limited-edition designs, combined with their low price point, have helped position the totes as a practical item and an accessible fashion accessory.

The bags, sold for $2.99 and available in four colors, are part of the retailer’s viral mini tote line, which has developed a cult following since first taking off in 2024.

"The Striped Canvas Mini Totes are a limited-time product," Nakia Rohde, a company spokesperson, told Newsweek. "Each store will have different availability. If customers have questions about availability, they should ask the friendly crew members in their neighborhood Trader Joe’s store. Our buyers travel the world searching for products we think are exceptional and will find a following among our customers. The totes are a recent example of those efforts."

Lines Around the Block—and Sellouts Within Hours

Scenes outside stores resembled a major product launch rather than a grocery run. In locations across the U.S., shoppers began lining up before opening, with some stores reporting lines forming hours in advance.

In New Jersey, customers started lining up at around 7:30 a.m. for a 9 a.m. opening, only for stock to disappear within an hour.

Elsewhere, videos showed hundreds of people waiting outside stores, with one report estimating more than 475 people in line at a Las Vegas location before 8 a.m.

The surge in demand meant many stores imposed strict limits—often allowing customers to buy just four bags each—in an effort to stop bulk buying and give more shoppers a chance.

Trader Joe’s has acknowledged the scale of demand and the complications that have followed. Rohde said availability “will vary from store to store” and emphasized that tote releases are limited, with some locations introducing per-customer caps. She added that staff are on hand to help shoppers with product availability questions.

At the same time, the company has taken legal action against a rise in counterfeit totes appearing online, saying it had filed lawsuits to protect customers from being misled.

“At Trader Joe’s, it’s very important to us that our customers are getting what they’ve paid for,” the company said in a statement, adding that it sells its products only in its own stores to ensure authenticity.

‘The Line Was Wrapped Around the Corner’

For many shoppers, getting hold of the bags came down to timing—and luck.

Rachel Ghiamina of Houston told Newsweek that her husband arrived shortly before opening, only to find a crowd already waiting.

“My husband said he went a few minutes before the store opened, and the line was wrapped around the corner of the store,” Ghiamina told Newsweek. “Because there are too many people, they limit how many bags we can get, which is four.”

She picked up four bags, one for herself and others to share with her daughter, mother-in-law and sister-in-law.

Despite the long wait, Ghiamina said it was all worth it: “It was worth the wait because it's $2.99 each instead of paying more from the resellers.”

Her experience reflects what played out across the country, with shoppers racing to collect all four colors before shelves emptied.

Why a $3 Bag Is Causing a Frenzy

The frenzy surrounding the bags is not new. Previous drops have triggered similarly chaotic scenes, with viral videos showing shoppers crowding store displays as soon as stock appears. What began as a low-cost reusable bag has since evolved into a broader consumer phenomenon, with demand fueled by limited releases, social media buzz and a growing resale market where items are sometimes listed for far above retail.

The bags—measuring roughly 13 inches by 11 inches—are designed for quick shopping trips, but their appeal extends far beyond practicality.

Limited supply, frequent sellouts and a growing resale market have turned them into collectible items, with some versions listed online for far above the retail price.

Will They Restock?

Trader Joe’s has not confirmed a nationwide restock schedule, and availability varies by store, meaning some shoppers may still get another chance—if they act quickly.
