Today is a special day for puzzle lovers—Wordle has reached its 1000th daily brainteaser.

It may have launched more than two years ago, but the game is still hugely popular, with word nerds logging in every day to try to find that five-letter word in six guesses or fewer.

Wordle launched in October 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown restrictions. In its first month, the game had 90 players, but by January 2022, it had reached over 2 million.

But why has Wordle endured, when so many other internet fads come and go?

According to its creator, Brooklyn-based software engineer Josh Wardle, it's the one-puzzle-a-day model that keeps players hooked. He got the idea from The New York Times game "Spelling Bee," which also allows users to solve only one brainteaser per day.

"I built a prototype of Wordle in 2013. Functionally it's almost the same as the one we have now, with the biggest difference being that the older version allowed endless play. In other words, you could just keep on going until you had your fill," Wardle told Newsweek in January 2022, shortly before The New York Times purchased the game.

"The idea to impose a limitation came when my partner and I started getting into crosswords during the pandemic," he said. "I liked the idea that everyone around the world was trying to solve the exact same word at the exact same time. It created a shared communal experience. [If] there were multiple puzzles to solve and everyone was at a different stage, then there wouldn't be that kind of conversation, which I think is the most fulfilling part of Wordle."

If you're struggling to solve today's puzzle, don't fret! Where there's a Wordle, there's a way. As usual, Newsweek has put together a few hints to help you out.
