Motorized, three-wheel conveyances have been around at least since 1886 when the Benz Patent Motorwagen debuted as the first "automobile." Historically, they usually have one wheel in front and two in the back. Fast forward 130 years and buyers still have several motorized trike options, now some have two wheels in front and one wide tire in the back, like the latest Polaris Slingshot.
The Slingshot, which debuted in 2015, keeps what's great about a motorcycle, the speed, the wind in your hair, the small footprint, and gets rid of what's not, the balancing, the leaning, at least some of the danger.
For 2023 Polaris upgraded and updated the two-passenger Slingshot with more tech, more customization and more comfort. It now comes in four trims starting at $21,499 and $21,799 in California, where it needs some extra items to pass emissions testing.

"Whether you're looking to elevate your everyday, escape on an epic adventure, or utilize the three-wheel canvas for self-expression, the 2023 Polaris Slingshot delivers limitless possibilities to design your perfect ride," said Chris Sergeant, Polaris Slingshot Vice President in a press release. It made changes to the Slingshot because of those passionate customers. The 2023 model offers a RAM X-Grip Phone Mount and a new rearview mirror. The cell phone holder mounts to the center of the dash for easy viewing. Heated and cooled seats are also offered as well as interior lighting and a premium audio system.
A new 7-inch touchscreen display is available with Apple CarPlay mobile phone connectivity via Bluetooth and USB. Turn-by-turn GPS navigation with connected services is standard on R models, but available via accessory upgrade for other models with the touchscreen.
There are more than 50 new accessories available, including color-matched or contrasting parts like the Slingshade top, Rear Fender, Exterior Painted Accents, Belt Guard and Front Grille. There's also the easily removable canvas Excursion Top and a variety of integrated storage bags. The Slingshade has hard, color-matched T-Top panels featuring automotive-grade finishes and tinted windows to retain overhead views.
A Vented Sport Hood is available in 16 different colors and improves aerodynamics and cockpit airflow. It comes stock on the Slingshot R, but is available as an accessory upgrade for all other 2020-2023 models.

The four Polaris Slingshot trims are S, SL, SLR and R. The base Slingshot S comes with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine making 178 horsepower. Both a manual and an automatic transmission with paddle shifters are available. The Technology Package 1 adds a 50-watt Rockford Fosgate audio system with a 2.7-inch display, speaker pods and tweeters in the dash. It also adds the vehicle security package and a standard Ripper Series Clear Wind Deflector.
The Slingshot SL is available in four color schemes (Storm Gray, Cobalt Blue, Neon Lime, and Pacific Teal) with a 100-watt sound system and the 7-inch touchscreen display. The 2023 SL models are available with a manual starting at $27,499. An automatic transmission adds $1,850.
The SLR improves performance with a 203-hp four. The SLR has two-tone paint, extra exterior lighting, premium sport interior, and a 305-mm rear wheel. The SLR comes in Red Shadow, Lime Shadow, and Cobalt Blue Fade for $30,399.
Finally, the top Slingshot R is offered in five base colors with multi-tones, Brembo front brake calipers, the 7-inch display with navigation, Apple CarPlay and a Sport Vented Hood. The R starts at $33,999 with a five-speed manual transmission. The automatic version is $36,149.
The 2023 Polaris Slingshot ships to dealers in early 2023.
