A post about a landlord who offers an unusual solution for a tenant's toilet design dilemma has amused users on Reddit.
The post was shared by u/RazPie in the r/Plumbing subreddit and has amassed 4,100 upvotes and hundreds of comments since it was posted around two weeks ago in late March.
A caption shared with the post says: "Landlord did this instead of have me swap it for a round front toilet in the unit next door." The post features an image of a portion of the edge of the bathroom door cut out to fit around the rim of the toilet bowl. A second image shows the door closed, with the cut out effectively appearing like a peep hole in the door.

The tenant, who did not share their name, age or location, told Newsweek: "I did plumbing at a rental unit. It was my mistake changing the toilet out from round bowl to elongated. I was surprised to see the landlord had his maintenance guy cut the door because I told him I would fix my mistake for free."
The tenant explained: "It wouldn't have even cost anything for the replacement round toilet itself to do the swap because the landlord has an extra round front toilet," an old one, "in a unit he owns next door to the property pictured."
The viral post comes as a rent surge during the COVID pandemic has caused an "unprecedented affordability crisis" in the United States, noted a 2024 report from the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University.
Around half of renter households in the country were reported to spend over 30 percent of their income on rent, while 12.1 million households are "severely cost-burdened," with more than half of their income spent on housing expenses, marking a 1.5 million rise from pre-pandemic levels, according to the report.
'I Love This So Much'
Viewers on Reddit were entertained by the landlord's creative fix for the tenant's toilet issue.
U/graphic_fartist simply said the landlord "Nailed it," while u/TheKman60 noted " So much for privacy."
U/skitso wrote: "I love this so much. It's like $160 for a new door that swings outward."
U/Sassmaster008 said: "The best part is the hole isn't big enough to accommodate the toilet seat! If the seat is down that door is not opening. Had friends in college that had an apartment with this exact feature!"
U/MonMotha said: "I appreciate the raggedness of the cut at the top and of course the fact that it's a hollow-core door to start with. Now THAT's a landlord special."
