A significant storyline involving John Cena, Intercontinental Champion Dominik Mysterio, and GUNTHER was reportedly in place within WWE just a few weeks ago. The plan hinges on the outcome of "Saturday Night’s Main Event" on November 1st, which will air as a Peacock exclusive from Salt Lake City. That show features Mysterio defending his title in a Triple Threat match.
In the latest edition of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer provided insight into the title match and its connection to larger plans. “The fourth match is Dominik Mysterio vs Penta vs. Rusev for the IC Title.
Mysterio would be the favorite, given there was the plan a few weeks ago of John Cena winning that title from Mysterio at Survivor Series and defending against Gunther in his retirement match.”

The rumored plan would then see Cena defeat Mysterio in San Diego, finally capturing the Intercontinental Championship—the one title that has eluded him throughout his career, which would make him a Grand Slam Champion.
Following this historic win, Cena would reportedly then defend the Intercontinental Championship against GUNTHER. This match against "The Ring General" would serve as Cena's official retirement match, which is scheduled for a special "Saturday Night's Main Event" on December 13th.
GUNTHER, who has been off television since his loss at "SummerSlam," has also been linked to cryptic vignettes that Cena recently referenced on his Instagram, further fueling speculation about this specific matchup.
WWE's next major Premium Live Event is "Survivor Series: WarGames," scheduled for November 29, 2025, at Petco Park in San Diego, California. While the event is confirmed to feature the WarGames match format, no specific matches have been officially announced.
The show is, however, being promoted as John Cena's final in-ring appearance at a "Survivor Series" event, adding weight to the report that he will be in a major singles match for the Intercontinental Championship rather than participating in one of the WarGames bouts.
