A siren is a Greek mythological creature that is described as half-bird, half-mermaid. Sirens are also described as having beautiful voices that lead sailors to their demise.

In addition to Cleveland, the WNBA approved expansion teams in Detroit, Michigan and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Detroit will begin playing in 2029, then Philadelphia will join in 2030. This season, the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire made their debuts as new expansion teams in the WNBA.

Cleveland Had a Wnba Team Before the Sirens

Before the Sirens, there were the Cleveland Rockers.

The Rockers were one of the eight original WNBA teams, and the franchise played in the league from 1997 to 2003. Former Cleveland Cavaliers owner Gordon Gund also owned the Rockers before giving the franchise up in 2003. The Rockers could not secure another owner, which ultimately led to the franchise folding.

Now, current Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert owns the Sirens. He is reportedly planning to host theme nights and throwback events to honor the original Rockers.
