After Tampa Bay Lightning star Nikita Kucherov decided not to re-sign with the team and requested a trade, the NHL has been beside itself with teams throwing their names into the surprising lotto hurricane.

One such team who could weather the storm and nab the foward: the Vegas Golden Knights.

According to ESPN, this is a real possibility.

“By law, we must include the Golden Knights if a superstar player could become available in free agency or via trade. They’d have to bury a few contracts in the desert to make it happen – and adding Kucherov’s salary would make them a perilously top-heavy team at forward against the cap.

“But they’re a contender, they have Ivan Barbashev as a countryman and a Milstein client, and Kucherov would have the likes of Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner with whom to vibe. Oh, and no state income tax. That too.”

Other teams mentioned include the Dallas Stars, New York Rangers and the Utah Mammoth.

The 33-year-old Kucherov said his decision to leave was about a lack of communication with Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois and that the GM mishandled contract negotiations.

“It was never about the money for me,” Kucherov said on Monday. “It was more about poor communication and respect.”

“You know, over the last four months, we only have had two conversations, and Julien in the end made it clear that I’m free to walk on July 1st.”

The reigning MVP is in the final season of an eight-year, $76-million contact.
