Back in July, Steve Yzerman resigned as general manager of the Detroit Red Wings following their disappointing 2025-26 season.

Since then, the Red Wings have been searching for their next general manager. Now, after weeks of silence, the Red Wings have made a GM decision ahead of training camp.

The Red Wings have announced that they have named Shawn Horcoff as their interim general manager as they continue to search for a full-time one.

Red Wings Governor and CEO Chris Ilitch issued a statement following Horcoff's interim general manager hiring:

"As our process continues to find the best possible leader for Red Wings hockey operations, I’m appreciative of Shawn for stepping up to serve in this capacity. His knowledge of our organization and range of experience allows us to operate with a clear decision-maker in place for the season ahead, while maintaining our commitment to carry out a thorough, methodical search process on our own timeline. Shawn has my complete support, and the authority to make decisions in the best interests of our organization."

Seeing the Red Wings name Horcoff their interim general manager is not necessarily surprising. He has been with the Red Wings organization since 2016 and became their assistant general manager in 2022. Now, as the Red Wings continue to look for their next full-time general manager, the former NHL forward will be in charge for the time being.

In 15 NHL seasons split between the Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars, and Anaheim Ducks, Horcoff posted 186 goals, 325 assists, and 511 points in 1,008 games.
