Carson Wentz's career was given new life when the Minnesota Vikings signed him after training camp as a veteran backup for J.J. McCarthy.
Wentz got his chance early this season, with McCarthy dealing with an ankle injury he suffered in Week 2. The Sam Darnold comparisons naturally surfaced as Wentz is another veteran quarterback who could undergo a career revival under head coach Kevin O'Connell.
However, approaching his fifth start for the Vikings, Wentz may be facing his final chance to play in the NFL ahead of a "Thursday Night Football" matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers.

According to Darren Wolfson of local ABC News affiliate KSTP, no matter how Wentz performs, J.J. McCarthy will be given back the starting job as early as next week against the Detroit Lions.

"It doesn't matter how Carson plays on Thursday night," Wolfson said. "He could be brilliant. He can lead the Vikings to an upset over the Chargers. I don't think it matters. I think we see J.J. McCarthy on Nov. 2."
Given the fact that Wentz was unsigned heading into September, there may not be interest beyond this season for Wentz to play again in the NFL.
Wentz has gone 2-2 as a starter for the Vikings, throwing for 268 yards per game and five touchdowns to four interceptions. The former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback had a case to take the starting job before a disappointing loss to the Eagles that saw him throw two interceptions, including a pick-six.
There's no saying what the Vikings might have done if Wentz realized a Darnold-like career rebirth. However, based on the Vikings' decision to let Darnold and Daniel Jones walk in free agency, the plan has always been to find out what they have in McCarthy.

McCarthy, dealing with an ankle injury, is close to returning to 100% health, which Kevin O'Connell has maintained is necessary for the young quarterback to have the mobility to protect himself in the pocket.
