The Minnesota Vikings are in the market for a new quarterback this offseason, but the available talent that could make a difference is slim.

The first season with J.J. McCarthy under center left the Vikings with more questions than answers heading into 2026, and now head coach Kevin O’Connell is looking to add some competition to the QB room, for the right price.

Fans have pondered a potential reunion with Kirk Cousins after the Atlanta Falcons released him, while other notable signal-callers, such as Aaron Rodgers and Kyler Murray, are also up for grabs.

However, Zach Rosenblatt of The Athletic raised an interesting idea for the Vikings to bring in a veteran with experience as both a proven winner and a steady backup.

Rosenblatt suggested the Vikings could land Cincinnati Bengals free agent QB Joe Flacco this offseason. The 41-year-old quarterback split time with the Bengals and the Cleveland Browns last season, throwing for 2,479 yards and adding 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

“He’s a good veteran presence to have in any quarterback room,” Rosenblatt wrote. “Especially one with two young quarterbacks, and he’s looking for an opportunity to at least compete to start — which he’d get in Minnesota.”

Rosenblatt also mentions the Vikings were interested in acquiring Flacco’s services last season before ultimately landing on Carson Wentz.

Flacco took home Super Bowl MVP honors after winning Super Bowl XLVII with the Baltimore Ravens, where he later mentored Lamar Jackson. He’s become a journeyman quarterback since then, but he might be the right guy to either steer McCarthy’s career in the right direction or step on the field and help the Vikings compete in a tough NFC North race.

If the Vikings were to go in another direction, such as signing Murray to a deal, it would send a strong message that the organization doesn’t believe McCarthy can develop into a future star QB. The Vikings should be busy when free agency begins on March 11.
