The Kansas City Chiefs had the Denver Broncos right where they wanted them on Sunday, but a fourth-quarter collapse handed their division rival control of the AFC West.
Kansas City led 24-13 in the fourth quarter before Denver rattled off two touchdowns — the second a five-yard run by Jonah Coleman to take a 28-24 lead.
The Chiefs still had one last shot, and they appeared to take it when quarterback Patrick Mahomes found Rashee Rice for the go-ahead touchdown from the Denver 1-yard line. However, a flag negated the would-be game-winning Rashee Rice touchdown.

Right tackle Jaylon Moore was called for a false start with four seconds left, wiping out the score. On the redo from the 6-yard line, Mahomes was sacked by Malcolm Roach to end the game.
“I didn’t see it,” head coach Andy Reid said of the penalty. “That’s one man’s opinion. I saw him move his head, but I didn’t see a false start.”
But tight end Travis Kelce wasn’t interested in blaming the officials. Instead, the 37-year-old pointed the finger at himself, after his own first-quarter false start helped stall a drive that ended in a punt. He also had some stern advice for his teammates as well.
“Reality of things is we’ve got to fix a lot — the little things, mistakes — and it starts with the person you’re looking in the mirror at,” Kelce told reporters after the game. “I’m one of them. I’ve been frustrated with myself on how long I’ve been in the league and the procedural stuff that’s happened for the past three games, really.
“Really since the bye, and it’s frustrating. You just can’t f---ing do it. Excuse my language. I’ve got to be better for my teammates, and that sets the tone for a lot of people in this room. Everybody’s just got to up the ante from that.”
Kelce has a point.
He and Moore weren’t the only offenders on Sunday, as left tackle Kahlil Benson was flagged for an illegal formation, and Moore was also called for an ineligible man downfield. Kicker Harrison Butker missed another field goal in the fourth quarter too.
The result: Mahomes fell to 80-3 in his career when leading by double digits in the fourth quarter, and the Broncos extended their winning streak in one-score games to 15 over the last two seasons.
