Training camp is officially underway for several NFL teams while others will be easing into camp throughout the next week.

The Arizona Cardinals and Carolina Panthers kick off the 2026 preseason with their Hall of Fame Game clash on Thursday, Aug. 6 on NBC, and Week 1 of the preseason officially kicks off the following week on Aug. 13.

As we count down the days until the start of the NFL regular season — which kicks off with a Super Bowl LX rematch between the Seattle Seahawks and New England Patriots on “Sunday Night Football” on Sept. 9 — we continue to look at key offseason storylines for each of the league’s 32 teams.

This week, we’re looking as the players most in danger of being cut during the preseason, and we’re starting with the Cardinals.

Arizona Cardinals RB James Conner

...

James Conner, RB

Fortunately for the Cardinals, Conner has a modest $4.8 million cap hit next year. Unfortunately for Conner, he’s the oldest player in a crowded backfield that features No. 3 overall pick Jeremiyah Love, former 1,000-yard rusher Tyler Allgeier, and promising former third-round pick Trey Benson.

There just may not be enough touches to go around, and Conner could find himself as the odd man out as the preseason winds down.

Jacoby Brissett, QB

Brissett boldly started off the offseason by holding out in hopes of landing a new contract. The problem: he has zero leverage. Yes, the 33-year-old signal-caller had a career year last season, throwing for 3,366 yards, 23 touchdowns, and eight interceptions, but he’s not a young passer in his prime, and the Cardinals are OK with being bad again in 2026 because they likely plan to draft a QB high next year.

It’s plausible the Cardinals choose to begin the season with Gardner Minshew as the starter and rookie Carson Beck waiting in the wings while Brissett is released and Arizona saves $5.9 million in cap space.

Sean Murphy-Bunting, CB

The Cardinals currently have 11 cornerbacks on their roster, and they will presumably only carry five or six into the regular season.

Based on last season’s production, Will Johnson, Denzel Burke, Garrett Williams, and Max Melton should be locks to make it, leaving Murphy-Bunting to battle it out with Kei’Trel Clark, Elijah Culp, Jaden Davis, Elijah Jones, Kalen King, and Starling Thomas V for possibly two spots.

Of all those players, Murphy-Bunting has the highest cap hit ($7.5 million), meaning he’s likely the most likely to be cut when the time comes.
