Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud is currently playing under the fourth season of his rookie contract.

He was eligible to receive a long-term contract extension this past offseason, but the two sides were ultimately unable to come to an agreement before the start of the year.

While the Texans were unable to sign Stroud this past offseason, they still plan to commit to him as their quarterback of the future.

On Monday — just one day after the team dropped a disappointing upset loss to the New York Giants at home — Texans general manager Nick Caserio said the organization plans to sign Stroud to an extension at the conclusion of the 2026 season.

"You can ask C.J. what his thoughts are. We had really good discussions. We were close. I don't think anybody worried about it," Caserio said, via team insider Aaron Wilson. "He's playing good football. That's no surprise. We supported him all off-season when he was badmouthed for one bad half of football. The contract will take care of itself.

"There wasn't any reluctance. Couldn't quite come to agreement. Nobody is discouraged," Caserio added. "Have a lot of respect for C.J. and [his agent] David [Mulugheta]. At some point, it will take care of itself."

Stroud and the Texans are 2-5 to begin the 2026 NFL season. In Sunday's loss to the Giants, he completed 17 of his 28 pass attempts for 153 yards and two touchdowns.

Houston, which has its bye in Week 8, will look to get its season back on track in a Week 9 matchup against the winless Los Angeles Chargers.
