No starting quarterback is safe anymore in the NFL unless your team believes you can be the franchise guy.

As the NFL's metagame continues to change each season, we're at another turning point, with teams giving up on the sunk-cost fallacy of investing in long-term signal-callers.

The Indianapolis Colts appear done with Anthony Richardson after picking him fourth overall just a few years ago. J.J. McCarthy went from an undisputed starter for the Minnesota Vikings to maybe being out by his sophomore season. The Arizona Cardinals finally gave up believing Kyler Murray could be the kingpin in the desert, telling him on Monday that they would be releasing him at the start of the new NFL year.

And something similar is happening in Miami, with rumors swirling that they could be ready to cut ties with Tua Tagovailoa. Once seen as the face of the franchise, the former Alabama Crimson Tide QB was benched at the end of last campaign and appears to be done in South Beach, with a complete overhaul coming to the Miami organization.

While Tagovailoa will find another job in the NFL if he wants it, there's a chance he could even be a starter for a team come the start of the 2026 season.

One of the teams that might offer him the starting job if released knows Tagovailoa extremely well, having played against him twice every year.

The New York Jets, per reports, are interested in talking to Tagovailoa if and when he is released by the Dolphins.

NFL insider Mike Garafolo spoke on Tuesday about the possible team-up between the Jets and Tagovailoa.

"From my understanding, the Jets, amongst them, are doing some calls to get the fullest sense of who Tua is as a person," he said. "The Jets have multiple options when it comes to the quarterback situation, and Tua, I believe, is among those."

The new NFL season officially begins with free agency this coming Monday as the negotiation window opens on March 9 at noon Eastern.
