Pittsburgh Steelers fans are waiting with bated breath to find out how much time star linebacker T.J. Watt will miss following the punctured lung he suffered during the week at the team facility.

The details of what happened are still unclear, though thanks to Watt’s brother, former All-Pro defensive end J.J. Watt, everyone knows the how and when.

“Yesterday TJ had successful surgery to stabilize and repair a partially collapsed lung suffered Wednesday after a dry needling treatment session at the facility,” JJ wrote on X on Friday. “Recovery timeline is still TBD, but all went well and he is being released from the hospital today.”

Watt won’t play in Pittsburgh’s Week 15 matchup against the Miami Dolphins on “Monday Night Football,” but he could miss significantly more time based on the four weeks New York Jets quarterback Tyrod Taylor missed after he suffered a punctured lung at the team facility years ago when he was with the Los Angeles Chargers.

A similar timeline would put Watt’s status in question for the wild-card round of the playoffs should the Steelers qualify for the postseason.

But that may not be the only bad news to come from the situation, according to both Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk and Mike DeFabo of The Athletic, the Steelers themselves could be in trouble if Watt decides to file a grievance with the NFL Players Association or escalate things even higher.

“At the appropriate time, the NFL Players Association may seek some answers,” Florio wrote. “For now, the NFLPA has acknowledged that it is aware of the situation and has been in touch with Watt and his representation. … Litigation is, in theory, a possibility in this case, depending largely on the extent of the impairment and its impact on Watt’s ability to play.”

DeFabo added: “It’s unclear if Watt will consider filing a grievance or pursuing similar legal action. The NFLPA is aware of the situation. The union has been in contact with Watt’s camp and is in the process of gathering more information.”
