The Cleveland Browns entered last season with four potential options at quarterback. Notably, all of them seemed to be ahead of Shedeur Sanders in the pecking order.

Sanders, a fifth-round rookie, didn't get much of a chance to make his case in training camp. According to The Athletic's Zac Jackson, he felt like he didn't get a fair shot to show what he was capable of:

"Sanders felt he didn’t get a fair shake last spring and summer. As fourth in line, he never got the number of reps needed to make a strong impression. The time he missed last August due to an oblique strain ended any real chance he had to climb the depth chart -- and there probably wasn’t much chance of that happening anyway," Jackson reported.

The Colorado product now enters this season in an entirely different position. While Deshaun Watson will reportedly have an opportunity to win the job, Jackson believes Sanders is in the driver's seat to run away with the QB1 job:

"But I think the job is Sanders’ to lose, and we’ll all soon see what twists and turns are encountered here in Chapter 19 of the Browns’ perpetual quarterback competition," added Jackson.

Everybody will get a clean slate with new head coach Todd Monken in town. Monken claimed that reps wouldn't be divided equally, and even though he didn't name who would get the bulk of the work at first, he said he'd consider how things went last season before making a decision.

Sanders showed flashes of strong play but also made some big mistakes in Year 1. Granted, he wouldn't be the first rookie quarterback who has struggled right out of the gate, and he didn't have a single first-team rep until he was forced onto the field late in the season.

He clearly still has a long way to go, but he might be the Browns' best hope at a franchise quarterback right now.
