With Super Bowl LX now concluded, the NFL offseason is officially underway. While free agency is roughly one month away, quarterback Shedeur Sanders and the Cleveland Browns already received some bad news on Monday.

After nine seasons with the franchise, reliable Browns tight end David Njoku announced on Instagram that he will be leaving Cleveland this offseason as he enters unrestricted free agency.

“Cleveland, first off I love you. These nine years have been a beautiful journey,” Njoku wrote. “I am so grateful for all the memories we shared together. Thank you to the Haslams, Andrew Berry and the entire Browns organization for everything. To all my teammates I shared the battle with, I’m so grateful for you guys. The time for me to find a new home has come, and all I can think of is the gratitude in my heart. The city of Cleveland will forever be home.”

The Browns have experienced significant offensive roster turnover over the years, but one of the few consistent pieces has been David Njoku. Now, with a new head coach in Todd Monken, the team — and whoever emerges as the starting quarterback — is set to lose one of its most reliable targets.

Sanders started the final seven games of the season, and while the decision was somewhat controversial given that he threw seven touchdowns against 10 interceptions during that stretch, he still earned a Pro Bowl replacement nod.

He now enters the offseason well-positioned to compete for the starting role again in 2026, though it is far from guaranteed — something Monken acknowledged after being hired.

Competing with Sanders will likely be fellow 2025 draft pick Dillon Gabriel, along with veteran Deshaun Watson, who is expected to finally make his return in 2026 after multiple Achilles injuries over the past two years.

There’s also the possibility that the Browns target someone in free agency or dip back into the draft to add more competition, despite it being considered a fairly weak class at the top.
