The New Orleans didn’t fare well running the ball last season, but the team is set for splash signing at the running back position.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the Saints will sign Jacksonville Jaguars running back Travis Etienne. Rapoport reported that Etienne will have a four-year, $52 million deal.

As Rapoport noted, Etienne is a Louisiana native, which brings the young star “back close to home” after five seasons with the Jaguars. Etienne became a prep star at Jennings High in Jennings, Louisiana, followed by a standout career at Clemson from 2017 to 2020 before the Jaguars made him the No. 25 pick in the NFL Draft.

Etienne rushed for 1,107 yards and seven touchdowns on 260 carries last season for the Jaguars as he helped the team turn things around from 4-13 in 2024 to 13-4 in 2025. It marked his third 1,000-yard season in his five-year career.

He missed his first season in 2021 due to a Lisfranc tear in his foot, and he only reached 558 yards rushing in 2024 during a difficult season for the Jaguars. Overall, Etienne has 3,798 yards for 25 touchdowns on 897 carries in 66 career games.

Etienne also brings solid pass-catching to the table with 168 receptions for 1,338 yards and seven touchdowns in his career. Last season, Etienne caught 36 passes for 292 yards and six touchdowns.

Etienne has been solidly taking care of the ball throughout his career, with just seven fumbles and only four lost fumbles. Most of those came in 2022, and he didn’t lose a fumble last season.

With the addition of Etienne, the Saints have a running back for the future to replace an aging Alvin Kamara, 30. The longtime Saints star had just 471 yards rushing and a touchdown last season, which led to speculation that New Orleans would go a different direction with the backfield.
