The move that brought running back Rico Dowdle to the Pittsburgh Steelers was already one of the more interesting developments of the 2026 NFL offseason.
Now, Dowdle added a personal layer to one game on the schedule.
Speaking during his introductory press conference Friday, the veteran running back said his upcoming matchup with the Carolina Panthers is “definitely circled for sure,” a comment that quickly drew attention around the league.

Dowdle is coming off a career-best season in Carolina before departing in free agency, and his remarks set the stage for what could become one of the more intriguing revenge-game storylines of the 2026 campaign.

Pittsburgh entered the offseason looking to reinforce its ground attack after losing key depth and seeking a more consistent rushing presence.
The franchise ultimately landed Dowdle on a two-year contract worth about $12.25 million, part of a broader set of roster moves designed to keep the team competitive in the AFC North.
Dowdle’s signing came after a breakout run with Carolina in 2025, when he emerged as the Panthers’ lead back.
The 27-year-old finished the year with 1,076 rushing yards on 236 carries, averaging 4.6 yards per attempt while scoring six rushing touchdowns. He also added 39 receptions for 297 yards and a receiving score.
His performance in Carolina followed another milestone season the year prior with the Dallas Cowboys, when he rushed for 1,079 yards in 2024.

With Dowdle now in Pittsburgh, the NFL’s 2026 schedule will feature a Steelers–Panthers matchup that instantly carries extra intrigue.
Revenge games are a staple storyline in the league, but Dowdle has firsthand experience turning those situations into career moments.
In 2025, he produced one of the most explosive stretches in Panthers history, piling up 473 scrimmage yards across two games and dominating against his former Cowboys teammates in a dramatic 30-27 victory.
That history helps explain why the upcoming meeting with Carolina already carries emotional significance.
