The Tennessee Titans have traded cornerback Roger McCreary to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for a conditional fifth-round pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, according to ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter. The deal gives Tennessee an earlier fifth-round selection, while the Rams will receive one of the Titans’ later sixth-rounders, pending final conditions.

McCreary, a 2022 second-round pick by the Titans, has appeared in all eight games this season, starting three. His rookie contract expires at the end of the year, and with Tennessee sitting at 1-7 and in the midst of organizational change, moving him was a calculated decision as the team leans into a rebuild ahead of the Nov. 4 trade deadline.

The Titans have reportedly been open to offers for several veterans, including tight end Chig Okonkwo and linebacker Arden Key. Schefter recently reported that those three names have drawn the most trade interest around the league, while rookie quarterback Cam Ward and defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons remain untouchable. With head coach Brian Callahan fired and Tennessee’s season already slipping away, the Titans appear focused on accumulating draft capital to reshape the roster under new leadership.

For McCreary, the move represents a fresh start with a contender. While his play has dipped this season, he remains a versatile defensive back who can operate both inside and outside. That flexibility and experience made him a valuable trade target for the Rams, who have been actively searching for cornerback help after injuries and inconsistency plagued their secondary.

Los Angeles entered its Week 8 bye with a 5-2 record and a share of the NFC West lead. With an offense led by Matthew Stafford, Puka Nacua, and Davante Adams producing at a high level, the team’s primary weakness has been in pass coverage. The Rams’ cornerback group, featuring Decobie Durant, Darius Williams, Emmanuel Forbes, and the injured Ahkello Witherspoon, has struggled to contain opposing passing attacks.

Reports from The Athletic’s Dianna Russini indicated that the Rams, along with the Baltimore Ravens, Detroit Lions, and Indianapolis Colts, were making calls across the league in pursuit of a cornerback. McCreary was among the names generating significant buzz, and Los Angeles ultimately moved quickly to secure his services before another team could.

The acquisition aligns with the Rams’ win-now mentality as they push toward another postseason run, particularly with Stafford’s future uncertain beyond this season. Adding McCreary provides immediate depth and a potential starter who fits well within defensive coordinator Chris Shula’s system.

From Tennessee’s perspective, the trade reflects the new front office’s pragmatic approach. McCreary, while talented, was not drafted by the current regime and does not fit their preferred physical profile for defensive backs. Rather than extending him to a larger contract or losing him for nothing in free agency, the Titans opted to gain a mid-round draft asset and move forward with younger, cheaper options in the secondary.

Both sides meet different goals through this deal. The Rams shore up a vulnerable position for their playoff push, while the Titans continue stockpiling draft capital for a future rebuild. With the deadline approaching, this trade could mark the beginning of a busy week for several organizations.
