After a strong end to the offseason which saw the team push eventual NFC Runners-Up, the LA Rams, to an ultra-tight 34-31 game in the Wild Card Round of the playoffs, hopes have been high amongst the Carolina Panthers.

However, the team may have suffered a devastating blow on Thursday as 2025 breakout rookie edge rusher Nic Scourton went down during practice, with the issue seemingly being with his right knee, as reported by The Athletic's Joe Person.

Around half an hour later at the post-practice press conference, head coach Dave Canales confirmed that the issue was with his knee, and that the would be sent for imaging.

Whilst Canales kept any suspicions or thoughts he had close to his chest, perhaps the most revealing tenet of the situation was Scourton's own reaction and that of his teammates, with Person noting that each player came over to hug him on the medical cart as he was being taken off the field.

There is no confirmed report about Scourton's diagnosis, with imaging and further tests likely to confirm any potential injuries. But as it stands, things certainly do not look good. Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network also reported that Scourton was unable to put any sort of pressure at all on his right leg.

If this is a serious, season-ending injury this will no doubt be a serious blow to the Panthers' defensive operations.

The Texas A&M product had an excellent debut year in 2025, and alongside new, highly-compensated free agent acquisition Jaelan Phillips was expected and hoped to take a big leap forward – despite having already produced 5 sacks and 7 tackles-for-loss last season.

Behind him, the team will have to turn to former Viking Patrick Jones II and 2025 third round pick, Princely Umanmielen, who combined for 2.5 sacks in 2025.
