The clock is ticking for the San Francisco 49ers to get a deal done with star offensive tackle Trent Williams. The future Hall of Fame tackle has been a staple by the bay for the past six seasons, but as NFL free agency nears, he’s looking for one more big payday.

According to SportsBoom’s Jason La Canfora, the two sides remain at an impasse without much progress toward an agreement.

“San Francisco’s initial proposal to Williams was seen as decidedly low, according to league sources, which is not unusual with how that team often initiated contract discussions,” La Canfora wrote.

The 49ers reportedly offered Williams a two-year deal that was “below average for a player of this accomplishment” as the team attempts to make more salary cap crunch moves to maximize potential additions.

The belief is that Williams has the leverage in the negotiations, and if he were to be released as a result of no deal with San Francisco, one of the franchise’s postseason enemies could swoop in and steal the star away.

La Canfora reports that the Kansas City Chiefs are in play for Williams, should he hit the open market. Despite having some inherent injury risk entering his age 38 season, he would be a huge lift to a unit that has struggled to protect superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes in recent seasons. Kansas City is viewed around the league as the “most eager” team to land Williams.

“Williams wants to win a Super Bowl, Kansas City has done more of that than any franchise since drafting quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and the Chiefs went after Williams very aggressively the last time he was on the open market,” La Canfora wrote.

In 2021, the Chiefs did pursue Williams before he inked a six-year, $138.06 million contract extension with the 49ers. If the 49ers were to lose Williams this offseason, there isn’t a clear succession plan in place, and it could force the team to address the offensive line early in the upcoming draft.
