It didn't take long before the New York Jets realized they had made a mistake with Justin Fields. They benched him down the stretch last season and shipped him to the Kansas City Chiefs early in the offseason after trading for Geno Smith.

However, the return of the prodigal son might not be what this team needs right now. Smith didn't look good last year either, and while plenty of that had to do with his supporting cast and Chip Kelly's offense, he may not be a franchise-caliber quarterback anymore.

That's why FOX insider Ralph Vacchiano wouldn't be surprised if the Jets were to sign a veteran as an insurance policy. In his latest mailbag, he named the likes of Russell Wilson and Joe Flacco as potential options:

"Actually, I don’t think they’re going to trade for another quarterback, but I do think they’re likely to sign another veteran as sort of Geno insurance," Vacchiano wrote. "...guys such as Russell Wilson, Joe Flacco, or any former starter who is clearly now more suited for a clipboard-holding role. I also wouldn’t be shocked to see the Jets draft a quarterback on Day 2."

Kirk Cousins would probably make more sense for them, and they might have one of the few teams where he could be a starter right now. However, he will likely be patient and wait for an injury or Aaron Rodgers' retirement decision.

Wilson lost his starting job to rookie Jaxson Dart less than two months into the season, and Flacco's first tenure with the Jets didn't go well. He's admittedly played well every now and then, but he may not be much of an upgrade at this point in his career.

As things stand now, the Jets are probably better off rolling with Smith and focusing their efforts on a much deeper QB class of 2027.
