New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel secured another familiar face from his previous tenure with the Tennessee Titans on Wednesday.
It comes as little surprise since Vrabel had his share of success with the Titans, and new Patriots safety Kevin Byard was part of that run in Nashville. New England signed Byard to a one-year, $9 million contract, per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. Byard led the NFL with seven interceptions last season for the Chicago Bears, Meirov highlighted.
Byard played for Vrabel from 2018 to 2023 before the Titans traded him to the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023. Vrabel shared his thoughts on Byard’s departure at the time, which ESPN Titans reporter Turron Davenport re-shared on Wednesday.

“I want to thank Kevin for what he means to me personally and to this team,” Vrabel said in 2023 via Davenport. “When I arrived, he helped carry a new message into the locker room and establish the mindset and work ethic we were trying to instill throughout the team.”
“An intelligent and athletic player, he has led the secondary and helped us win a lot of games,” Vrabel added. “Kevin and Clarke and the kids mean a great deal to me, and I wish them success in all that is in front of them.”
With the Titans, Byard made one Pro Bowl and had 27 interceptions, 63 pass deflections, three forced fumbles, four sacks, and 674 tackles in nearly six seasons. Byard’s production continued strong with the Eagles, as he tallied 75 tackles, an interception, and seven pass deflections in 10 games.
He joined the Bears in 2024 as a free agent and helped the team turn around from a 5-12 team that year into an 11-6 team in 2025. Byard had eight interceptions, 15 pass deflections, a forced fumble, two fumble recoveries, two sacks, and 223 tackles in two seasons with the Bears.
