Despite Kirk Cousins' past success under new head coach Kevin Stefanski, the Atlanta Falcons still released him at the start of the new league year.

The Falcons opted for Tua Tagovailoa to compete with Michael Penix Jr. for the starting job. And even though that might speak volumes about Cousins' current reputation in the league, he played well enough last season to earn another shot.

However, he's running out of options, at least to be a starter. That's why he may not sign with a team soon at all. According to NFL insider Jason La Canfora, Cousins might have to play the long game and wait for an injury in training camp before choosing his next destination:

"Every year some team suffers a devastating quarterback injury during spring practices or training camp, and some teams that draft quarterbacks in the top few rounds also tend to find out pretty quickly that the prospect is not going to be ready to contribute early in the season," La Canfora wrote. "It might require one of those situations to emerge for Cousins to find his next club unless (Aaron) Rodgers opts to retire."

While he also reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers are keeping tabs on him, La Canfora cited other contending teams as potential destinations. However, he wouldn't have much of a chance to be a starter there, unless there's a major injury:

"Several executives have noted Cousins’s past ties to head coach Kyle Shanahan (San Francisco) and Sean McVay (Los Angeles Rams), and believe Cousins could be a welcome addition as a back-up there (or perhaps with Andy Reid in Kansas City), but at this point it seems unlikely Cousins would go that route without exhausting any opportunity to start," La Canfora added.

Cousins is a proven veteran who can still be productive in the right system. While not the youngest guy, he'd be an upgrade over several current starters.

For now, however, it looks like he'll just have to be patient.
