The Kansas City Chiefs just saw a likely draft prospect essentially come off the board due to a recently failed physical in the AFC by a player not named Maxx Crosby.

Kansas City picks No. 9 in the draft next month, and the Chiefs’ options potentially shrunk when the Cleveland Browns, which hold the No. 6 pick, backed out of signing defensive end A.J. Epenesa on Sunday over a failed physical. The Athletic’s Ben Standig explained that the Browns will likely go for a defensive end such as David Bailey or Rueben Bain with the No. 6 pick.

“Potential wrinkle here for the Browns picking at 6,” Standig wrote via X. “Epenesa was expected to be part of a DE rotation opposite Myles Garrett. Seems reasonable that [David] Bailey or [Rueben] Bain could be higher on Cleveland’s board than any WR or LT.”

That likely leaves the Chiefs with only one option or neither among the top defensive ends in the draft. It’s a position of need for the Chiefs, and ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. recently had the Chiefs picking Bain in his latest mock draft. Kiper had Bailey going at No. 2 to the Jets in that mock draft.

“Bain is dominant off the edge,” Kiper wrote. “He simply finds ways to get to the QB, whether it’s with his speed, power or savviness. He had 71 pressures last season en route to 9.5 sacks and 18.5 tackles for loss.”

Kiper also mentioned LSU cornerback Mansoor Delane and Tennessee cornerback Jermod McCoy as “considerations” for the Chiefs. If Kansas City can’t grab Bain at No. 6, the Chiefs will at least be able to improve the defense in another spot. It’s also possible for Bailey or Bain to fall to the Chiefs at No. 9 but not likely.
