Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert declined to engage with Rams safety Quentin Lake’s criticism Wednesday, while coach Jim Harbaugh defended his quarterback after the Chargers fell to 0-7.
On the "St. Brown Podcast," Lake accused Herbert of “seeing ghosts” during the Rams’ 24-9 victory Sunday. Asked about the remarks, Herbert said he had not heard them and would not offer a response to comments he had not reviewed.
“I haven’t looked into it, haven’t heard anything about it, so I can’t really make a comment about it,” Herbert said.

Harbaugh disagreed with Lake’s assessment when reporters raised it with him.
“As far as anybody’s opinion I don’t see that,” Harbaugh said. “Everybody’s entitled to their opinion. Not what I see.”

The coach said Herbert had done his job exceptionally well but acknowledged two throws the quarterback would want back. Herbert threw two interceptions against the Rams, with the second helping set up a touchdown in the second half.
The turnovers came after the Chargers had held a 9-3 lead late in the second quarter. The Rams scored before halftime, then opened the third quarter with another touchdown drive to move ahead 17-9.
Herbert directed his attention toward the Chargers’ preparation rather than Lake’s evaluation.
“We’re really just focused on what’s going on in the building, playing football and doing what we can and doing our best to, you know, go put our best effort out on Sunday,” Herbert said. “And that’s all that really matters. Anything outside of that is out of our control.”
Herbert has completed 131 of 212 passes for 1,398 yards, five touchdowns and 10 interceptions, a 69.3 passer rating.
Los Angeles finished Sunday’s loss without a touchdown despite its early lead. The Chargers’ offense scored nine points, all before halftime, as the Rams handed them their seventh loss.
The Chargers host the Houston Texans (2-5) on Sunday at SoFi Stadium.
