The Miami Dolphins rarely trade within the AFC East division, and trades with the New York Jets are even more infrequent.
But the Dolphins bucked that trend on Monday when they agreed to ship five-time Pro Bowler and three-time All-Pro Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Jets in exchange for a late-round draft pick, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
“Trade: The Miami Dolphins are sending Minkah Fitzpatrick to the New York Jets in exchange for the 2026 seventh-round pick from the Chargers, per ESPN sources,” Schefter reported. “The Jets will sign Fitzpatrick to a three-year, $40 million deal, per his agent Drew Rosenhaus.”

It marks just the sixth trade all-time between the Dolphins and Jets, and the first time the teams have traded an All-Pro-caliber player. It’s also just the 22nd time the Dolphins have traded within the division.
The last time New York and Miami traded with each other was back in 1996 when the Jets traded offensive tackle James Brown to the Dolphins for a fifth-round pick. The teams tried to work out a trade for running back Kalen Ballage back in 2020 but it was voided days later after a failed physical.
Fitzpatrick, the NFL’s co-interceptions leader in 2022, was traded to the Dolphins last June along with a 2027 fifth-round pick from the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for All-Pro cornerback Jalen Ramsey, tight end Jonnu Smith, and a 2027 seventh-round pick.

The 29-year-old defensive back recorded 82 tackles, two fumble recoveries, a forced fumble, a sack, an interceptions and six passes defended across 14 games. He also allowed a 77.1 completion percentage (27 catches on 35 targets), 253 yards, two touchdowns, and a 103.1 passer rating against in coverage last season, per Pro Football Focus.
Fitzpatrick’s addition both fills a hole and bolsters New York’s safety depth. The team is losing safeties Andre Sisco and Isaiah Oliver, who combined for 432 coverage snaps, 96 tackles, and four pass break ups last season, to free agency.
It also gives the Jets a mentor for 2025 fourth-round pick Malachi Moore, who had a breakout rookie season, totaling 101 tackles, a forced fumble, a fumble recovery, and four passes defended while playing 514 coverage snaps — a team-high among safeties.
