Plaxico Burress had one of the better wide receiver careers in New York Giants history, and NFL insider Jeremy Fowler of ESPN sees "shades of Plaxico" in one healthy Giants wideout.

That's Giants rookie Malachi Fields, a third-round pick from Notre Dame in this year's draft. Fields has a golden opportunity to make a niche for himself with the Giants as Malik Nabers returns from injury.

Fowler noted the "Giants (are) highly impressed with him so far" and that his style resembles Burress. Fields had a solid collegiate career between Virginia and Notre Dame with 165 receptions for 2,479 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Drawing a comparison to Burress is a big compliment layered with big expectations. Burress, who played at Michigan State from 1996 to 1999, was a No. 8 pick in the 2000 draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Plaxico Burress

...

He played for the Giants from 2005 to 2008 between his two stints with the Steelers and before one season in a New York Jets uniform in 2011. Burress helped the 2007 Giants team win the Super Bowl against a formerly 18-0 New England Patriots squad.

He made the top 100 Giants of all time in celebration of the franchise's 100th season, and his 21st all-time among the team’s receivers. Burress would be much higher on that list had he played for the Giants longer, and his numbers were impressive with 553 receptions for 8,499 yards and 64 touchdowns.

Burress used his 6-foot-5 frame to maneuver defensive backs, and he could make plays on vertical passes and tight routes alike. Fields has a similar size at 6-foot-4, and he is adept at using his frame and high-pointing the ball. He can make tight red zone catches, similar to Burress, and that's something Giants head coach John Harbaugh's staff will be looking for.
