The New York Giants acquired J.J. McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings on Sept. 28 for a 2027 fifth-round pick, after quarterback Jaxson Dart went down with a season-ending knee injury in Week 2.

Dart suffered a torn MCL and meniscus, and veteran Jameis Winston struggled in relief, completing 11 of 27 passes in a loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

New York wanted a young quarterback with starting experience, and McCarthy, the 10th pick in 2024, was a third-stringer in Minnesota. He also has a connection to the Harbaugh family, with John Harbaugh now coaching the Giants and his brother Jim coaching McCarthy at Michigan.

McCarthy officially took over as the starter in a win over the Houston Texans in Week 7, going 20 of 28 for 252 yards without an interception. That game also extended McCarthy's win streak as a starter. He's now won his last five starts, the longest active winning streak among NFL quarterbacks, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

However, the Giants have also lost 13 straight games in Philadelphia, with their last win coming in Week 8 of the 2013 season. The Giants face off against the Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday.

The Eagles-Giants rivalry dates back to 1933 and remains one of the NFL's longest-running divisional matchups. Philadelphia has largely dominated in recent years, winning eight of their last 10 meetings and 16 of the last 20. However, New York did split last season's series, including a convincing 34-17 victory in October 2025.

This year, though, both teams look very different. The Giants are 4-2-1 under Harbaugh, and atop the NFC East, matching last year's win total of four in just seven games. The Eagles, meanwhile, are just 2-6, on a six-game losing streak, and starting Joe Milton with Jalen Hurts on injured reserve.

A win for the Giants on Sunday would extend their division lead, snap a long road drought, and prove that the team was right to trade for McCarthy. For McCarthy himself, it's a chance to show he can keep this team in the win column against a division rival in a tough environment. After Sunday, the Giants will host the Washington Commanders and Jacksonville Jaguars back at MetLife.
