One game after a zero-carry outing, Cam Skattebo powered the New York Giants’ ground game and then aimed his frustration at the NFL.

Skattebo carried 17 times for 124 yards and a score, helping New York outlast the Houston Texans 27-21 in overtime on Oct. 25. ESPN noted it was his first 100-yard rushing game as a pro.

His big day also drew a flag. Skattebo barreled into Texans safety M.J. Stewart at the tail of a long run and drew an unnecessary roughness penalty, with officials ruling he made contact with his helmet’s crown.

Giants coach John Harbaugh physically held back a fuming Skattebo on the New York sideline, then protested the flag himself.

What he told the official, Skattebo kept private. The league was another matter.

“I will say, man, the NFL loves to post me when I do stuff like that, but then also wants to take stuff from me. So, I mean, I’m going to run the ball like I want to run the ball, and if I’m going to continue to get flagged or it or fined for it, man, I guess I’m going to play for free.”

OutKick noted the replay looked much like many of Skattebo’s earlier carries, and he acknowledged a fine may be headed his way.

The breakout came after a rough few weeks. Skattebo put the ball on the turf during the extra period versus the Washington Commanders, fumble No. 5 of his 13-game career, and that matchup finished in a tie.

A week later, he played six snaps without a carry as the New Orleans Saints beat New York.

Against Houston, a career-long 42-yard burst in overtime set up Devin Singletary’s 30-yard walk-off touchdown.

In his view, the day was a message from the entire backfield after New York released Najee Harris.

“It was awesome to be able to show Coach and show the team that we have running backs in the backfield that can do it,” Skattebo said.

Skattebo’s hamstring acted up on the 42-yard run, and he limped out afterward. The 4-2-1 Giants head into a bye, then visit the Philadelphia Eagles to open two NFC East games inside five days.
