Despite the lofty expectations surrounding them, the Green Bay Packers have a good deal of work to do if they are to have a real shot at winning this season's Super Bowl championship.

On Sunday, they fell to, of all teams, the struggling Carolina Panthers, 16-13. Quarterback Jordan Love completed 26 of 37 passes for 273 yards, but he had no touchdown passes, and he had a third-down interception that allowed Carolina to take a 13-6 lead.

Josh Jacobs, a three-time Pro Bowler who led the NFL in rushing yards three years ago, had 87 rushing yards and one touchdown on 17 attempts versus Carolina. But on the season, he's averaging an underwhelming 3.8 yards per rush attempt, which is a far cry from the 4.9 yards per rush attempt he averaged in 2022. Last season, he was at 4.4 yards per carry.

Green Bay's defense has been mostly stellar this season, especially when it comes to stopping the run. It has held opponents under 100 rushing yards in six of eight games this year, but on Sunday, it allowed Rico Dowdle to break free for 130 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just 25 carries.

The team suffered a devastating blow to its postseason hopes in that same game when tight end Tucker Kraft, its leading receiver in 2025, suffered a torn ACL, ending his season. Given that the Packers don't have a bona fide star at the wide receiver position, this injury will give them a steep mountain to climb the rest of the way.

They will be seriously tested this coming Monday when they host the defending Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, a team that is 6-2 and may be working out its kinks after struggling to win games in September.
