Diego Pavia and his public ties to Johnny Manziel have been a slow-burning story since the Vanderbilt quarterback began drawing national attention in 2025.

Manziel was a polarizing former college star at Texas A&M who dazzled on the field but was dogged by off-field problems in the pros.

Any visible association immediately invites scrutiny, especially for a draft-eligible QB trying to convince NFL teams he’s a safe investment.

That scrutiny spiked this week at the NFL Scouting Combine when Pavia was asked point-blank about Manziel’s role in his life.

"He's just a friend to me, and so he's given me some mentorship," Pavia told reporters Friday morning. "He's been around me; he's been around my family. He's just a great person for those that really don't know."

Pavia is in the middle of a crucial evaluation period, where teams are weighing tape, stats, and character in equal measure.

His comments cast the relationship with Manziel as mentorship rather than a connection to Manziel’s more notorious college-and-pro days, but they also raise questions about the influences on a prospect whose maturity has already been a topic in Combine interviews.

NFL teams are particularly sensitive to off-field associations that could become distractions once a rookie hits the locker room.

On the field, though, Pavia’s résumé speaks for itself.

The Vanderbilt Commodores leaned on his dual-threat play to deliver one of their strongest seasons in years. In 2025, he threw for 3,539 yards and 29 touchdowns while rushing for 862 yards and 10 scores, winning the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award and earning a spot as a Heisman finalist.

Manziel, for context, burst onto the scene in 2012 as college football’s first freshman Heisman winner with the Aggies and quickly became a cultural phenomenon.

However, his NFL career never matched that early hype, and off-field issues complicated his professional path, a cautionary tale NFL personnel still reference when evaluating risk.

Pavia’s comments may ease some of the chatter or skepticism, but one quote at the Combine won’t erase deeper concerns if red flags emerge.

The real test will be whether his on-field production, interviews, and private workouts convincingly separate him from the shadow of Manziel’s story.
