It’s been a rough week for former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo after he was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence.

With so much going on in his personal life, Romo, the top color analyst for CBS’ NFL coverage, was placed on leave by the network on Friday and replaced by Houston Texans legend J.J. Watt.

The optics of Romo’s situation don’t look great, and many have been piling on with snarky comments on social media. But one of Romo’s former teammates is standing up for him and speaking out against the backlash he’s received in recent days.

“Lay off my QB,” former Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant posted on X. “As smart as Romo is and as great as he is as an analyst ..the knowledge he rarely shows the world is on another level. Romo should locks in..create and build his own thing and run circles around CBS.. 9 Just know..one decision doesn’t define the journey.”

Bryant played with Romo for six seasons in Dallas, and the two formed quite a potent duo.

The QB-WR tandem connected for 359 receptions, 5,133 yards, and 54 touchdowns during their time together. Romo made one Pro Bowl and had one All-Pro selection during that time while Bryant earned two Pro Bowls and a first-team All-Pro honor.

Romo has been with CBS since 2017, serving as the color analyst alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz on the network’s top broadcast crew.

He also signed a massive contract extension with CBS back in 2020 that locked him up until 2030 and pays him a reported $17 million per year.
