It looks like Los Angeles Chargers fans will have to wait a little longer for Derwin James' return.
On Wednesday, Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh announced that James, who has not played since Week 3 due to a hamstring injury, has suffered a setback in his recovery and could be placed on injured reserve.
If the Chargers place James on IR, that means he would not be eligible to return until Week 12, when the Chargers face the Patriots. The announcement comes as the Chargers are currently 0-6 and preparing to face cross-town rival Los Angeles Rams.

James has been with the Chargers since being drafted by the team in the first round (No. 17 overall) in 2018. In his career, the 30-year-old safety has been selected to the Pro Bowl five times, the All-Pro First Team twice, and the All-Pro Second Team four times.

Derwin James Has Played in Three Games This Year
“I know I’d say he’s the best safety I’ve ever seen. I think I did him a disservice. He’s the best football player I’ve been around," Harbaugh said about James last year. “When it comes to that stat line that you can’t see, there’s only one player I can compare him to, and that’s Junior Seau. The iron wall that negativity bashes against Derwin James, same with Junior Seau, and same energy, same love of the game, and all-out effort.”
Last year, James recorded 94 tackles, six tackles for loss, two sacks, three interceptions, and seven passes defended. In three games this year, the Florida State alum notched 21 tackles and one pass defended.
