Dallas Cowboys star cornerback Joey Porter Jr. has been dealing an ankle injury since Week 6, and after participating fully on Wednesday, he seems to have taken a step back towards playing in Week 9.

According to Jon Machota of The Athletic, the Cowboys downgraded Porter to a limited participant in Thursday’s practice, putting his status very much in doubt for Sunday's matchup against the Indianapolis Colts.

It has certainly been a frustrating series of events for the Cowboys since they traded a 2028 second-round pick and conditional 2027 sixth-round pick to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for Porter in September.

He has played less than 50 percent of the defensive snaps in two of the three games he has played in. Porter played 36 snaps in Week 6 against the Green Bay Packers, 51 in Week 7 against the Philadelphia Eagles and 36 in Week 8 against the Arizona Cardinals.

If Porter is forced to miss more time, Dallas will have to rely on fellow cornerbacks DaRon Bland, Cobie Durant, Ameer Speed and Shavon Revel Jr. to make up for his absence.

Porter began his professional career as the No. 32 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Through his first three seasons with the Steelers, he established himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the league while recording 165 tackles, one sack, 31 passes defensed and three interceptions.

He played college football at Penn State, where he had 115 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble, 17 passes defensed and one interception from 2019-22.
