The Dallas Cowboys showed glimpses of potential under first-year head coach Brian Schottenheimer this season, but ultimately they didn’t win enough games and, for the second straight year, will miss the playoffs.

They fell 34–17 to the New York Giants on Sunday and finished the year 7–9–1, boasting one of the league’s best offenses under Schottenheimer but also one of the worst-ranked defenses in most statistical categories.

Following the loss, however, Schottenheimer didn’t point fingers at anyone else, taking full responsibility for the team’s struggles.

“I’m disappointed, yeah, of course. Absolutely,” Schottenheimer said. “The question is why. We need to look and figure out why. I did not think that we would be 7–9–1. I didn’t think that we wouldn’t be in the playoffs. I expected to be in the playoffs and competing for the Super Bowl.

“We did not do that. That starts with me, and I understand that. But I can promise you this: we’re gonna get to the bottom of it. We’re gonna work our asses off to figure it out. We’re gonna adjust and make the changes we need to help us get there.”

On a positive note for Scottenheimer, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was very pleased with the job he's done this season, which he's made public on several occasions over the last handful of weeks.

"He’s had an outstanding year,” Jones said. “He’s technically as sound as you can draw up. We like really his philosophy of how to play football. We’ve had some adversity this year, he’s met it head on. … Bottom line is, I’m very pleased with his first year as coach.”
