The Washington Commanders hold the second overall pick in the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft. After a poor 2023 season, Washington has a major reason to feel excited for the future. Not only do they hold a top pick in the draft but they will enter the new season with a new head coach, Dan Quinn and a new managing partner, Josh Harris.
Harris now takes over the team and there is a new buzz around the Commanders for the first time in a while. Washington had been under owner Daniel Snyder but finally was able to get new ownership. With this, the team has a clear path forward. However, it seems that Harris has been more involved in draft decisions than anyone in the organization had expected.

According to Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, Harris has been directly dealing with the management of the club as the draft comes up. Normally, owners will have some input with club roster decisions but they allow the people they hired to call the shots. But ESPN's Adam Schefter also reported that Harris sat in on all the interviews that the Commanders had with the top quarterback prospects they could be drafting at the NFL Combine.
This is the first draft for the Commanders since Harris took over the team, so he may just want to make sure it goes smoothly. However, when owners get too involved, it starts to undermine the work that the other personnel in the organization do. Harris, Quinn, and first-year general manager Adam Peters are all new to the organization, so Harris should allow the football minds to do their jobs. Adam Wells of Bleacher Report put it perfectly.
"They empower the people they hire to run the football operations department and coaching staff to do their jobs. This formula doesn't necessarily guarantee success, but it can make the front office and coaching staff more comfortable knowing they don't have to constantly look over their shoulder."
Washington has a chance to turn the corner with this draft. They are being speculated to take a quarterback, either Jayden Daniels out of LSU or Drake Maye from North Carolina. This Commanders team hasn't had a franchise quarterback in some time and is now on the verge of becoming a real contender in the league if they can get the pick correctly. Harris rightfully wants to be involved, but his presence shouldn't limit others from doing their jobs right.
