The Indianapolis Colts experienced one of the very rare moments when a player decides to retire during the season. That player is All-Pro cornerback Xavien Howard. Howard randomly retired, leaving the Colts down a huge contributor in their secondary.

Howard took to Instagram to reveal his decision to walk away from the NFL, stating that his family is more important to him than remaining in the league away from them.

"...My purpose has been fulfilled in this sport, but my kids are more important to me than football. I've had a hell of a career, and even though it's ending in a unique way, I'm cool with that because for once I'm putting my family first and I'm proud and excited about that decision," part of Howard's statement reads.

With Howard out, the Colts decide to sign a new cornerback to their practice squad, though the choice is odd in nature.

The Colts announced that undrafted free agent Keenan Garber was signed to the practice squad.

Garber joined the Minnesota Vikings practice squad in 2025 after going undrafted out of Kansas State. He was cut before the start of the regular season.

As a member of the Kansas State football program, Garber spent three seasons as a wide receiver before making the jump to defense as a cornerback.

As a cornerback, Garber brought in 52 total tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, 11 passes defended, and two interceptions.

Garber's addition does not mean that he will be replacing Howard by any means, but the Colts' signing him for depth is a bit confusing. It would have been believed that the team may have tried to find a more proven veteran via another practice squad.

The Colts are a bit thin at cornerback with Howard retiring, and Jaylon Jones and Justin Wayler on IR. Though Garber is on the practice squad, he may be elevated for depth in the coming days and weeks.
