The Indianapolis Colts started the 2025 NFL season with a 7-1 record and looked like a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

However, the team has lost four of its last five games - and just lost starting quarterback Daniel Jones for the rest of the season to a torn Achilles. Backup quarterback Riley Leonard, who led Notre Dame to a national title game appearance last season, also suffered a knee injury and could miss Sunday's game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Earlier this season backup Anthony Richardson landed on injured reserve after he sustained a fractured orbital bone in a freak accident prior to the Colts' Week 6 win over the Arizona Cardinals. Head coach Shane Steichen revealed Richardson is "still working through it."

"Obviously it's an eye, it's very delicate. So he's just resting it, and then once the doctors and trainers clear him to be activated – that's where it's at right now. Still just healing up," he said of the Colts' former No. 4 overall pick.

As the Colts run out of quarterback options, they turned their sights to a retired future Hall of Famer.

Following Jones' season-ending injury, news broke that the Colts were considering the signing of legendary quarterback Philip Rivers. The quarterback hasn't stepped foot on the NFL field since his retirement after the 2020 season, when he threw for 4,169 yards with 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while leading the Colts to the playoffs.

"Yes, it's happening: The Colts on Wednesday signed 44-year-old quarterback Philip Rivers to their practice squad," the Colts officially announced on Wednesday, Dec. 10. But that wasn't the only quarterback move from the team.

"The Colts placed cornerback Charvarius Ward Sr. on injured reserve, signed kicker Blake Grupe and quarterback Brett Rypien to the 53-man roster from the practice squad and signed center Jimmy Morrissey to the practice squad," the team said in a statement.

It's unclear if Leonard will be able to play against the Seahawks, but it looks like Rypien will be the primary backup for Week 15.
