The Kansas City Chiefs took a big step toward fixing their broken running game by bringing back Eric Bieniemy as offensive coordinator and signing Kenneth Walker III.

Now, they must keep their prized quarterback out of harm's way, which got much trickier after parting ways with Jawaan Taylor earlier in the offseason. Even with Taylor struggling in pass protection and with penalties, he was a proven veteran, and they don't have much depth behind him.

That's why it's not much of a surprise to hear that the Chiefs might pivot to Taylor Decker if they can't trade for Trent Williams, according to NFL insider Jason La Canfora:

“I continue to hear the Chiefs have a major thing for 49ers left tackle Trent Williams and are ready to pounce if/when he is available in trade. The 49ers remain in a contract impasse with Williams about reworking that date. Decker would be an upgrade over what they have been getting out of the left tackle position,” wrote La Canfora.

Decker requested his release from the Detroit Lions after an impasse in contract negotiations. His market has dried up since, but he could agree to join the Chiefs on a short-term "prove it" deal to play for a contender and drive his stock back up. Whatever the case, it looks like the Chiefs are seriously considering all their options to improve Mahomes' blindside protection:

“They could always draft one,” one GM told La Canfora, “but I think (head coach) Andy (Reid) would prefer a veteran.”

Rookie left tackle Josh Simmons was impressive in limited snaps last season, but he left for a stretch to attend to an undisclosed family emergency. They could probably move him to right tackle to make room for the former Pro-Bowler.

Mahomes is coming off the first serious injury of his career, and the Chiefs gave up 2.8 sacks per game last season, the 10th-most in the league.
